NOGA criticizes government decision on online ads and slots

The Netherlands Online Gambling Association has taken issue with a recent decision made by the Dutch government.

Specifically, the Kamer vote that supported efforts to restrict online slots and online gambling advertising has been criticized. Director-General of NOGA Peter-Paul de Goeij called the decision irrational and irresponsible.

Michiel van Nispen of the Socialist Party (SP) proposed the motions, which were approved by Dutch ministers, as part of the Kamer’s evaluation of the KOA Act, which regulates the Netherlandsonline gambling industry.

Despite the approval, Legal Protections Minister Franc Weerwind will assess the motions to see if they can be passed into law and put to a Senate vote.

Minister Weerwind has received a warning from NOGA to disregard the motions, claiming that the House is making decisions based on incorrect data, presumptions, and exaggerated fears. They contend that prohibiting advertising for online gambling would push users to unlicensed websites without making a distinction between them.

Since ninety percent of players in the Netherlands only play with regulated providers, NOGA claims that the country’s gambling policies are working.  They argue that because of previous bans on advertising, players have already moved to illicit websites.

Minister Weerwind is expected to report to the House on the progress of motions pertaining to emergency laws and high-risk sports before assessing the KOA Act. Peter-Paul de Goeij thinks that both the incoming and outgoing cabinets would prioritise protecting online gamblers, and he is confident in Minister Weerwind’s approach.
