Petition urges denial of permit for Las Vegas F1 race
The Clark County Commission is being urged by a Change.org petition to deny special authorization for the Formula 1 that is set to take place on the Las Vegas Strip from November 21–23.
Lisa Mayo-DeRiso launched the petition on behalf of multiple business owners, alleging that businesses suffered large financial losses as a result of last year’s race preparations. During the six months of building that was required for these preparations, consumer traffic and sales were drastically decreased.
With 1,350 signatures so far, the petition is trying to get to 1,500. These kinds of petitions can affect political decisions even when they lack legal authority. The business owners argue that by lowering revenue and interfering with regular operations, the incident hurts employees, small businesses, and transportation providers. They also note that the damage was made worse by a temporary bridge constructed for the occasion, which further drove away consumers from their establishments.
Without a plan that minimizes disturbance, the business owners are demanding that no streets be closed for the event. In addition, they want payment for the thirty million dollars in losses they say they sustained. Even if they are thinking of filing a case against F1, they would rather try any other options first.
