Brazil betting bill goes through latest voting round

The bill aiming to regulate the sports betting sector in Brazil has recently undergone the latest round of voting.

The bill in question was originally approved over three weeks ago by the country’s economic commission (CAE), with its latest hearing in the senate expanding the bill with two new amendments. The first of the bill’s amendments involved limiting the scope of the bill to only the sports wagering sector, excluding gambling offerings from the regulation. This amendment also excluded betting on virtual sports matches and was approved with 37 in-favor votes, while only 27 senators voted against it during the session.

The second amendment that was approved added another exclusion to the bill, this time involving land-based machines. Through this amendment, the bill will exclude the installation of retail betting terminals from the country’s regulations. The amendment was approved with 45 in-favor votes and only 23 opposing votes.

Moreover, during the latest hearing of the bill, a third amendment was also voted on which aimed to restrict gambling sponsorships involving sports athletes and advertisements of the pastime in various sports venues. However, having received 36 opposing votes and only 25 supporting votes, the amendment was not able to pass.

Throughout the session, the senators also approved the tax recommendations that the CAE originally introduced in November, which involve a revenue tax of 12% for operators, along with an initial licensing fee of 30 million Brazilian reals.
