Betway cements position in South Africa through new T20 deal
Betway, the global sports betting operator, has announced its acquisition of the title sponsorship for the T20 Challenge Twenty20 cricket tournament in South Africa.
The operator already has operations in the country, as it cemented its position in the local cricket scene when it sponsored Proteas Tests and One Day International series fixtures that took place in South Africa. Through this new deal, the tournament will be renamed as the Betway T20 Challenge. The competition last for 10 days began on the 19th of February and will end on the 28th.
The tournament started last year as a replacement for the Mzansi Super League, which had to be cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Betway’s Marketing and Operations Director Paul Adkins stated:
We are extremely happy to be announcing our title sponsorship of the Betway T20 Challenge. It enforces our strong commitment to cricket in South Africa and we look forward to being part of this exciting tournament.
Cricket South Africa Acting Chief Executive Officer Pholetsi Moseki also mentioned:
They are already part of our family with their association with Test and ODI cricket and this new agreement just reinforces our partnership with them. I have no doubt that the Betway T20 Challenge will prove to be a huge hit. We have all our Proteas playing and they are mixed amongst some of the finest cricketers in the country, so it is a win-win situation for everyone.
Betway has quite a powerful presence in South Africa since it acquired a major deal with Golden Bridge back in April of 2020 through its local brand licensee Headsquare. In January 2021, the operator announced its new partnership in Brazil with the ‘Made in Brazil’ Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) team. The team is more commonly known as MIBR and is one of the top esports outfits in Brazil.
