Zimpler appeals recent Spelinspektionen order

Zimpler has recently announced that it will be appealing a recent order issued by the Spelinspektionen.

On the 6th of July, the payment solutions firm received an order from the Swedish gambling regulator to stop offering its BankID payment solutions to businesses that target the country’s gambling market without an appropriate license.

Zimpler has recently issued a statement, confirming that it will be complying with the order as part of its strategy to phase out agreements with unregulated offshore operators, which was announced a month prior to Spelinspektionen’s decision. However, the provider added that it will simultaneously appeal the order to clarify a few of its uncertainties.

The firm stated that the decision was not correct and could have unfair consequences for itself and the industry at large. Zimpler also added that the order contains several uncertainties which need to be clarified in a Swedish court in order to ensure that local payment firms can safely work with the iGaming sector without risking sizable penalties.

The questions highlighted by the firm include how the country’s gambling laws affect the EU’s free movement directive for services, can promoting gambling products that are not unauthorized be considered illegal, and how it is determined whether an offshore operator is considered to be breaking Swedish laws, particularly if they use BankID payment solutions.
