Thailand is battling against illegal online betting
Thailand’s approach on gambling is experiencing a dramatic change.
The government is cracking down on illicit gambling activities in the country while also working toward legalizing gambling. The goal of this crackdown is to eliminate illegal gambling businesses while legislative initiatives move forward.
To prevent unlawful online gambling, Thai authorities recently began a massive operation called “ZERO BET”. Two illicit betting platforms have been dismantled as a result of this operation. Significant seizures have also been made, including millions of Thai Baht’s worth of cash and expensive items.
But the problem isn’t limited to subterranean networks. Investigations and concerns have been raised over senior officials’ possible involvement in illicit gambling. Allegations have been made specifically about a relationship between the nation’s police chief and a gambling network.
Surachate Hakparn, the deputy police chief of Thailand, is one such individual who has been accused of money laundering connected to illegal online gambling networks. As a result, the Royal Thai Police declared that they would set up a committee to look into the accusations made against the deputy national police chef.
The results of the investigation are highly anticipated; they will be released to the public by the next week, as reported by the Bangkok Post. This highlights how complicated the issue is, with attempts to legalize gambling taking place in tandem with strong enforcement against its illicit counterparts, and suspicions about high-ranking politicians adding still another level of intrigue to the story.
