Strong opposition to proposed Times Square casino hotel

A casino hotel being built in the area is largely unpopular with residents living near Times Square as indicated by a recent poll carried out by Tulchin Research.

In a poll conducted, 71% of the local residents are against the casino, opposing it strongly at 59%, whereas it’s only supported by 23% of them.

This is especially true for women and older citizens across different demographic groups. Women show 77% opposition, with 62% opposing strongly. For those aged 55 and above, opposition reaches 81% and 68% are strongly against it too. Men and younger males in the area also largely disapprove of the casino.

Majority of citizens are troubled by the growing population leading to more frequent cases of increased traffic crime in an already busy area. On the other hand the casino, if built in Times Square, would lead to its decreased liveability and working environment as thought by 80% of the residents.

Neighbors also worry about local businesses and Broadway theaters being affected negatively: 65% think of it as a threat while 64% believe it will be detrimental for the local businesses.

Despite the attempts made by Caesars and developer SL Green to establish a symbiotic relationship between the casino and community businesses that would encourage people to make purchases locally and dine in the joints, opposition remains rigorous. Few voters believe that Times Square would be a good place for a casino, and a sizable number of New Yorkers oppose casinos in any part of the city. This points to a larger resistance to adding new gaming establishments to New York City.
