Spelinspektionen fines Yggdrasil for unlicensed software

Yggdrasil was fined 300,000 SEK for distributing unlicensed software, which violates Swedish legislation. The regulator issues a warning notwithstanding the company’s corrective efforts.

Spelinspektionen penalized Yggdrasil three hundred thousand Swedish kronor for providing its online gambling software to an unlicensed operator in Sweden. This violated the Gambling Act of Sweden, specifically section six of eleventh chapter, which prohibits owners of gambling software licenses from providing software to unauthorized users.

On the twenty-second of March 2023, Yggdrasil received a software license allowing it to produce, distribute, and install gambling software for online games in Sweden until the twentieth of June 2028. On sixteenth of January, 2024, the Swedish authorities began investigating into unauthorized operations. They determined that one of the operators had acquired software from Yggdrasil.

Yggdrasil claimed to have rectified the problem on the twenty-third of January of this year, and that the violation was caused by a retailer’s breach of contract. They confirmed that they no longer offer software to unregulated operators.

In spite of Yggdrasil’s remedial measuresa warning and a fine were issued by the regulatorThe company’s net sales in 2023 were €514,566, which served as the basis for calculating the penalties. The fine was fixed at three hundred thousand Swedish kronor, but it might have gone as high as five hundred eighty thousand Swedish kronor.

Although Yggdrasil’s license was not revoked, the regulator made it clear that all licensees must comply by the rules. The warning and charge serve as a helpful reminder of the seriousness of the violation and the need of following licensing regulations.
