UEFA looks into Zlatan Ibrahimović’s ties to betting operator
The UEFA (The Union of European Football Associations) has begun its investigation into the Zlatan Ibrahimović case where the football icon was linked to a betting operator, allegedly.
The Union has now stated that this investigation will be looking into the footballer’s financial interest in this company which has remained unnamed, which is a venture that technically breaches the Code of Ethics which has been set by FIFA, the international football governing body.
Even though the UEFA left the name of this betting operator out, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet had reported one early April that Ibrahimović has a stake in Bethard through his business, Unknown AB. The icon currently plays with Italian Serie A side AC Milan, and he began working with the betting firm in 2018 when he assumed a development role and acted as an ambassador.
The FIFA Code of Ethics mentions that players are not allowed to have an interest in entities or firms that promote or arrange gambling, lotteries or betting which are connected to football tournaments and competitions.
As the investigation is beginning, the Union cited section four of article 31 in its Disciplinary Regulations, where it is allowed to carry out an investigation by its disciplinary inspectors to look into any reported wrongdoings.
