Denmark’s Authorities Bring Attention to Security as Online Casinos Surpass Sportsbooks in Popularity

Majorly due to the pandemic’s regulations, which saw the traditional casinos to close down, paving the way for online betting to grow in popularity, 2020’s reports show a great boost in online casino bets, which made up around 27% of the industry’s market share, compared to sportsbook betting, which made up 25%. Both were, however overshadowed by lottery sales, which accounted to almost 35% of Denmark’s gambling industry’s gross revenue.
Out of the industry’s all sectors, slot games and terrestrial casinos were the most affected, accounting to 11 and 2 percent each to last year’s betting market revenue in Denmark.
A general conclusion for the Danish gambling industry is; the total revenue saw a 6% shrink in comparison to 2019, reaching around €1.2billion in 2020. Nevertheless, this seems like a not-so significant drop if compared to years prior 2019, which shows that despite the pandemic, the gambling industry in Denmark has remained relatively stable, as observed by Spillemyndigheden.
Another BSI-regarded observation is online casino’s share rising from 20 to 45%, and the traditional casino’s share dropping from 40 to 30 since 2012, which has been quite predictable as the two had equaled in 2017, whereas the online gaming’s surpass happened in 2018.
Additional observations show that the country made it into 10 least affected, consumption-wise, as compared to other EU countries’ reports. However, Denmark did fall behind a bit, as compared to other Nordic countries, with Norway taking up the first place with approximately 348.81 Euros per adult.
Morover, the Danish regulator revealed some insight into the ethical gambling statistics; more than 26,115 people were entered into the ROFUS, which is a number almost doubled in comparison to 2012’s reports.
What’s more, the gender composition of Denmark’s players stayed around the same; with men making up around 76% and women 24%. A positive shift in responsible gambling was spotted: gambling addiction advice forums were visited by player’s relatives less frequently in comparison to 2019.
