BlueBet fined AU$50,000 for gambling advertising breaches
State officials in Victoria fined Australian bookmaker BlueBet AU$50,000 ($32,400) for breaking advertising regulations related to gambling.
Forty-three charges of running gambling advertisements on or above public highways were linked to these infractions. The fine was levied following the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission‘s (VGCCC) submission of charges last year. The offenses concerned advertisements that aired in late August and early September of 2022.
In an effort to lessen gambling harm and enhance the state’s reputation in relation to gambling, the VGCCC fined BlueBet as part of a slew of penalties levied against casino operators, sports betting companies, and pokie clubs. Even with the forty-three charges, each of which carries a fine of 120 penalty units, BlueBet’s sanction is far less than the roughly AU$955,000 ($618,000) maximum that they may have been subject to.
The VGCCC opened an investigation into the illicit advertising in response to a public complaint made online. According to an earlier statement from a VGCCC representative, this allegation served as the basis for the investigation’s start.
Magistrate Greg Thomas cast skepticism on BlueBet’s claim that they were unaware that they were breaching the law in his ruling. If the company hadn’t entered a guilty plea, assisted the VGCCC, and made the required changes to ensure that similar infractions wouldn’t occur in the future, he said, he would have fined them AU$70,000 ($45,000) and filed a conviction.
