Spelinspektionen calls for clarification on COVID-19 gambling restrictions

Spelinspektionen has demanded some more clarification concerning the COVID-19 gambling restrictions, which includes a deposit cap of SEK5,000 (or USD $590) since Sweden is seeking to extend its COVID-19 measures until November of this year.

Earlier this month, the government suggested that an extension of these restrictions within the gambling sector was needed, such as the deposit limit for iGaming. These were implemented back in July of last year and were supposed to end by the start of the new year.

They have been extended though, with the latest one lasting for another two months. Spelinspektionen has since stated that the idea for the extension is completely valid since the coronavirus is still largely affecting the country.

Despite that, the regulator noted that the rules and regulations concerning the limit and other restrictions need to be clarified. Spelinspektionen also appealed a decision from the Linköping Administrative Court just last week to reverse the sanctions against Kindred Group regarding a breach in the deposit limit.

It further mentioned that the Linköping decision means the despite cap will be losing its importance as a measure for client safety as it allows operators that offer betting as well as casino to get around the limits that are set.

Camilla Rosenberg, director general, remarked:

“There are strong reasons to clarify the meaning of the provision in the memorandum which now forms the basis for the proposal for continued validity of regulation. The question is important for the licensees who offer both commercially online gaming and betting.”
